Paetongtarn Shinawatra Thailand

Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s election as Thailand’s Prime Minister marks a significant moment in the country’s political history. She is the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold this position, following her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra. Both of them were previously ousted from power by military coups and had to live in exile.

The Shinawatra family has been a powerful force in Thai politics for many years, particularly known for their populist policies that focus on helping the poorer sections of society. Thaksin’s policies, which included cash handouts and reforms aimed at boosting tourism, made him very popular with many voters but also made him enemies among the military and royalist elites. His daughter, Paetongtarn, has continued in his footsteps, advocating for similar economic policies.

Paetongtarn’s rise to power is also tied to the Pheu Thai Party, a political party closely associated with her family. Despite facing strong competition from the progressive Move Forward Party in the 2023 elections, Pheu Thai was able to form a coalition government, largely due to a deal reportedly orchestrated by Thaksin. This allowed Paetongtarn to become Prime Minister while also enabling Thaksin to return to Thailand after 17 years in exile.

Paetongtarn’s political career began relatively recently, in 2021, when she was appointed to a leadership position within Pheu Thai. Initially hesitant, she quickly became a prominent figure in the party and was eventually chosen as one of its candidates for Prime Minister. Her campaign focused on economic issues, with promises to raise the minimum wage, improve healthcare, and lower transportation costs.

However, her election also comes with challenges. The military and royalist elites, who were responsible for the downfall of her father and aunt, still hold significant power in Thailand. Any actions she takes that threaten their interests could lead to renewed political conflict.

As the new Prime Minister, Paetongtarn plans to focus on promoting Thailand’s “soft power,” including its culture, food, and sports, on the global stage. However, given her family’s history and the divided nature of Thai politics, her leadership is likely to be closely watched and potentially contested.
